Origins

mimic robotics, registered as Mimic Robotics AG, is a physical AI company headquartered in Zurich that builds dexterous robotic hands and the learning-based models that control them. It was founded in 2024 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, growing out of the university's Soft Robotics Lab led by Prof. Robert Katzschmann, who is a co-founder and the company's scientific advisor. The operating founders are Stefan Weirich (CEO), Elvis Nava (CTO), Stephan-Daniel Gravert (CPO) and Benedek Forrai. The company has since added a research unit in San Francisco alongside the Zurich headquarters.

Technical approach

mimic's central bet is that the hand, not the full humanoid body, is the part of the human form worth reproducing for industrial work. Its humanoid hands, which the company says reach sub-millimetre fingertip precision, are paired with off-the-shelf robot arms and mobile platforms rather than bipedal chassis. Training data comes from wearable capture devices worn by skilled operators during normal work, which the company uses for imitation learning rather than relying on teleoperation alone.

In July 2026 the company moved to a full-stack position, unveiling the mimic hand M1, a tendon-driven hand it describes as purpose-built for industrial automation, and the mimic wearable U1 ("umimic"), an exoskeleton for teaching tasks by demonstration. Both are designed and manufactured in-house alongside mimic's own software stack.

On the model side, mimic argues that Vision-Language-Action models inherit the limits of static image-text pretraining and that video backbones encode physical dynamics more directly. It open-sourced the mimic-video recipe in April 2026, a Video-Action Model architecture developed with researchers from Microsoft, ETH Zurich and UC Berkeley. In July 2026 it announced FLUX-mimic, built with Black Forest Labs on that company's FLUX 3 generative model, pairing a video prediction backbone with an action decoder. mimic says task-specific fine-tuning can require as little as 30 minutes of robot data where earlier approaches needed 30 hours or more — a claim that has not been independently benchmarked.

Commercial traction

The company's most visible customer engagement is with Audi, announced in February 2026, where a bimanual platform was shown installing a rubber weather seal on a door frame using an end-to-end policy. Audi's Production Lab has since said it is testing and deploying FLUX-mimic on tasks involving soft-body manipulation. mimic has also said its systems are being trialled with Fortune 500 manufacturers, global automotive OEMs and multinational logistics providers, though it has not named them.

Funding and position

mimic closed a $16 million seed round announced in November 2025, led by Elaia alongside Speedinvest, with Founderful, 1st kind, 10X Founders, 2100 Ventures and the Sequoia Scout Fund participating, bringing disclosed capital to more than $20 million. It has also taken non-dilutive funding from Switzerland's federal innovation agency and was selected for the AWS Generative AI Accelerator. Headcount was reported at roughly 25 at the time of the seed and the company now describes a team of more than 50.

Its positioning sits deliberately to one side of the full-body humanoid field: hands and models sold into existing arm-based automation, competing for the same factory-floor manipulation work that humanoid developers and established dexterous-manipulation vendors are targeting.
