Beijing Postpones Half Marathon Featuring Humanoid Runners Due to Wind Forecast
The Beijing Yizhuang Half Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, has been postponed to April 19 due to forecasts of very strong winds, organizers announced Thursday. The event is notable for its plan to have humanoid robots race the entire half marathon course alongside human participants for the first time.
While the postponement notice didn't specify if the conditions were more hazardous for robots or humans, experts noted humanoid robots might be more susceptible to tipping in high winds due to potential gaps in their training data for such scenarios.
The race aims to highlight China's advancements in the robotics industry and is held in Beijing's Yizhuang area, home to numerous robotics companies and a substantial government development fund. Officials previously stated the event tests both robotic endurance and AI capabilities.
Participating robots are required to have a human-like appearance and gait, finish within 3 hours 30 minutes, and operate safely. Special awards are planned for robots that complete the longest distance without needing substitutions or battery replacements. Testing of the robot runners has reportedly begun.
