EngineAI Deploys Humanoid "Cyber Staff" in New Shenzhen Retail Store

Shenzhen-based EngineAI has taken a novel step in commercializing its humanoid robots, opening what it calls the "Global first humanoid robot-themed trendy goods store" in the city's high-end UpperHills shopping center.
The new location, a "JD Home" cooperative store launched with e-commerce giant JD.com, was teased with posters announcing "Cyber staff officially on duty." Rather than selling the robots themselves as the primary product, the store will use EngineAI's humanoids as staff to sell consumer "trendy goods"—likely electronics and lifestyle products, given the JD.com partnership.
According to promotional materials, the robots' interactivity is supported by "JD JoyInside" technology. The opening marks a significant move from R&D and viral demonstrations to a permanent, real-world application.
This pivot to retail experience is a major public-facing test for the ambitious startup. Founded in October 2023, EngineAI has developed rapidly, launching multiple platforms like the SE01 and PM01 and securing tens of millions in funding to fuel its growth.
Until now, EngineAI has been best known for its dynamic demonstrations, such as the PM01's front flip and a viral interaction with livestreamer IShowSpeed. Deploying these robots as "cyber staff" in a busy mall provides a continuous, unpredictable test of their AI-driven, human-like movement and "bio-inspired gait design".
The store's debut highlights a clear strategy to normalize human-robot interaction, aligning with co-founder Ren Guowen's "ultimate goal... to bring humanoid robots into households for domestic services". While the company has pragmatic, near-term plans for industrial applications, this retail experiment serves as a crucial bridge, testing public acceptance and the robots' ability to operate safely in human-centric environments.
This new store creates an interesting distinction in Shenzhen's rapidly emerging robot retail landscape. It stands in contrast to the "6S" robot store that recently opened in the city's Longgang district. That "6S" model—building on the "4S" auto-retail concept by adding Leasing and Customization—functions as a multi-brand dealership for robots, a place to buy, service, or lease machines.
The EngineAI and JD.com store represents a different, and perhaps complementary, strategy: not just robots-as-a-product, but robots-as-a-service, or even robots-as-a-retail-experience. While the company continues to pursue ambitious production goals, aiming to produce nearly 1,000 robots this year, its "cyber staff" are already clocking in.
