Key AI Architect for Optimus Leaves Tesla
Ashish Kumar, the engineer leading the artificial intelligence team for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot, announced he has left the company. The departure marks the second high-profile exit from the critical robotics program in just over three months.
In a post on the social media platform X, Kumar described his tenure as "an incredible ride." He highlighted the team's strategic shift toward advanced, scalable AI methods. "We went all-in on scalable methods — swapping the classical stack with reinforcement learning & scaling dexterity by learning from videos," Kumar wrote. "AI is the most significant bit to unlock humanoids."
Reports suggest Kumar is joining Meta as a research scientist. His exit follows the departure of Milan Kovac, the Vice President who oversaw the entire Optimus program, in June of this year.
Not About the Money
When questioned by a user on X about his reasons for leaving what many consider one of the most important projects in technology, Kumar dismissed financial incentives as the motive.

"Financial upside at Tesla was significantly larger," he replied. "Tesla is known to compensate pretty well, way before Zuck made it cool. If I wanted to optimize for money, I would have stayed at Tesla." The comment suggests the decision was driven by other professional or personal considerations.
A Pattern of Change Amidst High Stakes
Kumar's exit is significant given his central role in the robot's learning capabilities. He was a key voice in promoting the team's recent breakthroughs, including a new method that allows Optimus to learn complex tasks directly from watching human video demonstrations. This strategy, which Kumar helped champion, is core to Tesla's plan to rapidly expand the robot's skill set without laborious teleoperation.
The leadership of the broader Optimus program transitioned to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s VP of AI Software, following Kovac's departure. Elluswamy's deep background is in the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) programs, reinforcing Tesla's strategy of creating a unified AI architecture for both its cars and robots.
However, losing the specialized AI lead for the humanoid project represents a notable talent drain. Developing a capable humanoid robot is a monumental challenge, and the departure of senior technical leaders at a critical stage introduces potential disruption as the company pushes to meet CEO Elon Musk's aggressive deployment targets. Musk has stated that Optimus could ultimately account for the majority of Tesla's long-term value, putting immense pressure on the team to deliver a viable product at scale.
