Foundation Reportedly Seeking $100M at $1B Valuation Amidst Ambitious Humanoid Goals
Sankaet Pathak's new humanoid robotics venture, Foundation, is reportedly aiming to raise $100 million at a striking $1 billion valuation, according to a report by The Information, subsequently covered by TechCrunch. This news comes as Pathak's previous fintech startup, Synapse, filed for bankruptcy earlier in 2024, leaving tens of millions in customer deposits unaccounted for.
Foundation, which we profiled in April 2025 upon the debut of its 'Phantom' humanoid robot, is targeting industrial automation in sectors like manufacturing and logistics. The company, founded in May 2023, has emphasized its proprietary rolling contact gearbox actuators and a hybrid AI approach combining state-based models with imitation learning as key differentiators. At the time, Foundation stated it had raised approximately $11 million in a pre-seed round in August 2023 from Tribe Capital and angel investors.
The reported $1 billion valuation is particularly ambitious given the company only publicly unveiled its Phantom robot earlier this year and had previously announced initial customer deliveries targeted for mid-2025. Foundation's stated mission is to "create advanced humanoid robots that can operate in complex environments" to address labor shortages.
The significant jump in desired funding and valuation highlights the intense investor interest in the humanoid robotics sector, which has seen substantial capital flow to companies like Figure AI and Tesla's Optimus project. However, the context of Pathak's previous venture and the early stage of Foundation's product development will likely be key considerations for potential investors.
Foundation aims to differentiate itself with hardware efficiency, claiming its actuators offer 90-95% energy efficiency, and a software strategy that purportedly allows for faster AI training with less data. The company had previously outlined plans to ship 40-50 robots in 2025, with a target of over 10,000 units in 2026.
TechCrunch reported it has reached out to Pathak for comment on the fundraising efforts. The outcome of this reported funding round will be a significant indicator of market confidence in Foundation's vision and its ability to execute on its ambitious roadmap in a competitive field.
