BYD’s humanoid robot is taking shape in public, with newly surfaced patent images offering a look at the Chinese automaker’s proposed design ahead of a formal unveiling.

CnEVPost reports that the images come from a Chinese design patent held by BYD. They show a bipedal machine with a dark oval face, light-colored body panels and articulated fingers.

  • The robot’s appearance has surfaced, but its specifications and production plans remain unconfirmed.
  • BYD previously outlined ambitions to put humanoids in dealerships and eventually sell them for household use.

A look at the proposed design

The front, rear and side views show a narrow waist, exposed joints and mechanical structures around the hips and legs. The hands have multiple articulated fingers, while panels cover much of the torso and limbs.

These are design renderings, so they provide a view of the proposed exterior rather than evidence of how the machine moves or performs tasks. The pictured form also need not be identical to an eventual production model.

A debut still to come

CnEVPost says BYD had confirmed plans for an August unveiling at its Di Space exhibition venue, but had not formally introduced the robot as of October 9.

The report also recalls executive vice president Stella Li’s ambition to place two or three robots in each BYD dealership to introduce and demonstrate vehicles, with the existing sales network potentially serving future household robot customers.

For now, the images add a visual outline to those ambitions. A demonstration and technical specifications would offer the next substantive look at what BYD’s robot can do.
