UK Startup Humanoid Teases HMND 01 Robot, Aiming for Labor Automation
UK-based robotics company Humanoid has released a new teaser video showcasing its humanoid robot, HMND 01, signaling its ambitions in the burgeoning field of general-purpose robotic labor. The company, founded by Artem Sokolov, aims to address global labor shortages and transform industries by developing commercially scalable humanoid robots.
Watch the teaser below:
HMND 01: Specifications and Features
The teaser provides a glimpse of the HMND 01, which Humanoid details on its website. Key specifications for the robot include:
- Height: 175 cm (5’9’’)
- Weight: 70 kg (154 lbs)
- Payload: 15 kg (33 lbs)
- Walking Speed: Up to 1.5 m/s (5.4 km/h)
- Degrees of Freedom: 41
- Average Run Time: 4 hours
Humanoid emphasizes several core capabilities for the HMND 01. 'Highly efficient manipulation' is attributed to high-torque actuators and AI-driven environmental perception. 'Advanced motion control,' leveraging both model-based and learning-based approaches, is designed to enable navigation in confined spaces. The company also highlights the robot's modular design for adaptability across various applications, a focus on reliability for a low total cost of ownership (TCO), and functional customizability through exchangeable protective garments.

The Humanoid Rationale: AI, Demographics, and Design
Humanoid positions its development within what it terms the "Robotics ChatGPT Moment," suggesting that advancements in generative AI and multi-modal models are significantly accelerating robotic learning and capabilities. The company believes these AI developments, coupled with increasing computing power, allow robots to learn through observation and imitation, fostering a kind of "collective intelligence" via shared neural networks.
The strategic impetus for Humanoid, as outlined on its website, is the convergence of declining global workforces, aging populations, and the persistent need for labor in sectors like warehousing, manufacturing, retail, and transportation. The company sees a significant market opportunity, citing projections from Goldman Sachs that estimate the humanoid robot market could reach $38 billion by 2035.
The choice of a humanoid form factor is deliberate. Humanoid argues that since the world is designed for humans, bipedal robots can more easily integrate into existing environments and utilize existing tools without extensive workspace redesign. This, they claim, offers an advantage over specialized industrial robots.
Target Applications and Future Vision
Humanoid is initially targeting labor-intensive operations in retail, e-commerce, third-party logistics (3PL), manufacturing, and automotive sectors. Early use cases identified for the HMND 01 include goods handling, picking and packing, and kitting and part handling in manufacturing settings.
The company outlines a phased approach to market penetration, starting with physical tasks by 2027, moving into service roles by 2030 to support an aging global population, and eventually aiming for household applications by 2035.
While the teaser offers a brief look at the HMND 01, further details on its real-world deployment, performance benchmarks beyond a controlled environment, and specific timelines for commercial availability are areas that will require ongoing observation as the company progresses. The field of humanoid robotics is rapidly evolving, with numerous companies vying to translate advanced prototypes into practical, economically viable solutions.
