Tesla has reportedly begun a new round of Chinese supplier audits for Optimus, adding a supply-chain development to the visible construction progress at its humanoid robot factories.

According to 21st Century Business Herald, in a report republished by Sina, a Tesla team arrived in Ningbo on September 16 and began audits the following day. Citing industry sources, the outlet said related orders had already been issued to suppliers.

The report describes work on manufacturing consistency and equipment commissioning as part of preparations for robot production. These are supply-chain accounts, rather than a new manufacturing announcement from Tesla.

Suppliers confirm cooperation, but not the latest visits

A follow-up by Yicai adds a more cautious picture. On September 18, its reporter contacted representatives of Tuopu Group, Ningbo Joyson Electronic and Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls. Tesla had not responded by the time of publication.

A Tuopu representative said they had not received notification of a new Tesla audit. However, the representative said Tesla research and development personnel routinely work at its Ningbo factory on automotive and robotics projects, and confirmed cooperation on linear, rotary and dexterous-hand actuators. Its robot-component base was ready, according to the representative.

Joyson declined to discuss downstream customers, citing confidentiality. A Sanhua representative said they were unaware of the new audit, while confirming work with a major customer on robotic joint actuators.

Those responses do not rule out the reported visits. They do distinguish established supplier cooperation from confirmation of this particular round of inspections.

Preparing to build, with output still uncertain

The reports follow our coverage of structural progress at Tesla’s Texas Optimus factory. Together, the developments suggest work on both the buildings and the component supply needed for production.

Tesla’s Q2 2026 shareholder update listed its California and Texas Optimus facilities as under construction. It said production lines were being installed at Fremont, with production anticipated later in 2026. Initial robots were intended for training-data collection and further development in its Optimus Academy.

The Chinese reporting also cites a plan for roughly 50,000 robots in 2026. That figure is not established as fresh Tesla guidance by the July shareholder update and should not be treated as a confirmed output forecast.

Supplier audits would be a meaningful preparatory step. The next test is whether qualified components and installed assembly lines translate into sustained robot production.
