As the race to commercialize general-purpose humanoid robotics accelerates across the United States and China, a new challenger from Darmstadt, Germany, is attempting to stake its claim. Pink Robotics, founded by German engineer Christopher Helmke, has revealed its first prototype: the P0.

The launch comes paired with a sharp, unfiltered assessment of the European robotics landscape. Helmke is framing Pink Robotics not just as a commercial venture, but as an urgent intervention to rescue Germany's slipping industrial stature.

A Frustrated Reaction to Domestic Incumbents

Pink Robotics emerged out of automation hardware work previously operating under Anyscrew GmbH. After pivoting away from earlier systems, Helmke evaluated customer demands across construction, agriculture, defense, and logistics, concluding that general-purpose humanoid form factors held the greatest commercial leverage.

However, the primary catalyst for the company's public debut was Helmke's dissatisfaction with the current state of German robotics. In an update detailing the startup's origins, Helmke pointed to the United States having dozens of humanoid players and China boasting hundreds, while Germany has remained largely confined to a couple of prominent contenders.

Specifically referencing a visit to Hannover Messe, Helmke expressed deep disappointment with the demonstrations put on by Germany's established humanoid developers. The German ecosystem at this scale is dominated by two heavily capitalized heavyweights: NEURA Robotics—which recently secured $1.4 billion in Series C backing for its 4NE-1 platform—and Agile Robots, the DLR spin-off developing the Agile ONE humanoid alongside Google DeepMind.

"I went to Hannover Messe and I saw the German humanoids and it was so bad," Helmke stated. "They have all this money, but they just don't understand this. Humanoids are a holy war... a holy war to save this economy."

Citing nearby automotive plant closures and machinery liquidations across Germany, Helmke argued that niche startups and current corporate efforts are failing to meet the moment: "We all understand that automotive will not carry this country any longer. We need something big, a new industry."

Inside the P0 Prototype

The P0 is a full-sized humanoid designed around human proportions to fit seamlessly into existing facilities without requiring architectural overhauls.

The robot’s mechanical chassis provides an extensive range of motion across 32 axes. According to the company, the frame relies on additive manufacturing and precision laser welding, enabling rapid iterations on joint packaging and linkage lengths.

While the team has begun training Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models for manipulation, Helmke acknowledged that current live demonstrations remain teleoperated. Transitioning from teleoperation to robust, real-world autonomy will be the startup's primary technical test as it builds toward commercialization.

Pilot in Supermarket Logistics

Pink Robotics is bypassing complex unstructured home environments to focus squarely on supply chain operations. The startup is preparing a pilot deployment inside the logistics distribution center of a large supermarket chain, where the P0 will be tasked with sorting packaged goods.

With an 8 kg payload rating, the P0 is tailored for item picking, parcel handling, and bin sorting rather than heavy palletizing. Distribution centers have become the primary battleground for bipeds, offering structured environments and clear metrics for return on investment.

Capital Disparity and the Road Ahead

Pink Robotics is currently raising a seed financing round to expand its engineering team in Darmstadt. The company faces significant headwinds: incumbents like NEURA Robotics and Agile Robots command massive balance sheets, dedicated simulation ecosystems, and global component partnerships.

Whether lean, bootstrapped engineering can outpace well-funded competitors remains an open question. For Pink Robotics, the upcoming supermarket pilot will serve as the initial proof of whether its critique of the German status quo can be backed up by working, autonomous hardware.
