Dynamic Creatures, a Boston-based startup co-founded by veterans of Boston Dynamics, Google, and the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, has officially emerged from stealth. Instead of chasing warehouse throughput, the company is targeting location-based entertainment and hospitality, combining advanced mobile robotics with real-time contextual AI to build what it calls "living character robots."
The company debuts with formidable institutional weight. Alongside institutional backing from Eniac Ventures, Kindred Ventures, Heliad, Sunshine Lake, and BlueGrass Ventures, Dynamic Creatures has secured strategic angel backing from Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert and has been designated Boston Dynamics' official entertainment and hospitality partner.

A New Layer Between Animatronics and Utility
For decades, character-driven robotics has lived in the domain of static animatronics—rigid machines engineered to execute pre-baked behavioral loops for stationary theater audiences. On the other end of the commercial spectrum sit service robots, typically wheeled pedestals designed for narrow functional tasks like basic room delivery or indoor wayfinding.

Dynamic Creatures is targeting the white space directly between them: autonomous, mobile, bipedal and quadrupedal characters designed to wander unstructured spaces and interact with individual guests dynamically.
"Traditional stationary animatronics, meanwhile, are generally programmed to perform for a crowd," the company noted in its debut announcement. In contrast, Dynamic Creatures' platforms are built for face-to-face encounters, reading contextual social cues and responding spontaneously rather than cycling through a canned choreography.
Underpinning these machines is SnowJay, an integrated AI and robotics software platform that acts as the operating system for the characters. SnowJay binds together real-time perception, costuming considerations, behavioral programming, and learning-based control. The goal is to allow expressive characters to traverse challenging commercial foot traffic while dynamically shifting demeanor and gait depending on who approaches them.
Pedigree at the Intersection of Control and Commerce
The startup's leadership reflects a rare convergence of commercial deployment experience and cutting-edge dynamic control research.
Chief Executive Officer Marc Theermann previously served as chief strategy officer at Boston Dynamics, where he helped orchestrate the company's transition from an R&D powerhouse into a scaled commercial business deploying platforms like Spot and Stretch. Prior to that, Theermann held senior leadership roles at Google.
Chief Technology Officer Farbod Farshidian brings deep technical pedigree from the academic frontier. Formerly a research leader at the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, Farshidian has authored foundational research in learning-based control, including high-speed quadruped locomotion and agile humanoid behavior for Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot.
"Robust and fluid movement, perception and behavior have to work as one system for a character to engage naturally in the physical world," Farshidian said. "SnowJay brings those capabilities together, combining reliable robotic platforms with adaptive intelligence so each character can understand its surroundings and respond in a way that fits the person, place and moment."
Dynamic Creatures plans to operate a hybrid hardware model. The company will design completely bespoke ground-up robots for specific intellectual property requirements, while also outfitting existing platforms—such as Boston Dynamics systems—with character shells, costuming, and expressive software. To accelerate adoption, the startup will offer leasing models for platform-based units, cutting deployment timelines down to several months while shielding operators from massive upfront hardware outlays.
Sidestepping the Valley of Death
The launch of Dynamic Creatures comes amid a broader industry debate over the viability of "lovable" and social robotics. The desire for machines that possess warmth and expressive personality has been well documented. Walt Disney Imagineering underscored the technical viability of physics-defying expressive bipeds with its free-roaming Olaf character, and industry figures like former iRobot CEO Colin Angle have turned to quadrupeds to bridge the human connection gap.
However, attempting to bring emotional humanoids directly to consumer living rooms has proven perilous. Earlier this year, Cartwheel Robotics shut down after struggling to secure capital to scale its expressive "Yogi" platform—despite demonstrating smooth motion and earning praise for its approach to approachable robotics. Cartwheel's founder, former Disney and Boston Dynamics engineer Scott LaValley, ultimately joined Google DeepMind to pursue physical AI foundation models under a well-capitalized tech giant.
Dynamic Creatures appears designed to navigate around that specific financial hazard. By bypassing the unpredictable domestic market and targeting commercial operators—such as theme parks, resorts, museums, cruise ships, and luxury retail venues—the company anchors its business model to enterprise capital expenditures where interactive experiences directly drive foot traffic and guest spend.
The company confirmed it is already collaborating with a major theme park and a large retailer to develop guest-facing experiences, though specific partner names remain under wraps.
Whether high-end commercial venues are ready to deploy roaming, costumed autonomous agents alongside unpredictable crowds will be the true test for SnowJay. But with Boston Dynamics' manufacturing footprint behind it and a leadership team intimately familiar with sim-to-real locomotion, Dynamic Creatures enters the emerging character space with advantages few startups before it have possessed.
