Unitree R1 Hits AliExpress: The TIME "Best Invention" Goes Global

AGIBOT AI Week: Solving the Physical AI Bottleneck
April 7–14 | A new technical reveal every weekday. From foundational datasets to integrated hardware, go inside the stack built for real-world impact.
The barrier between high-end research hardware and consumer-ready electronics just got thinner. Unitree Robotics, the Hangzhou-based powerhouse currently leading the world in humanoid shipments, has officially listed its R1 humanoid robot for sale on AliExpress.
The launch follows weeks of speculation regarding a reported partnership with Alibaba to leverage the e-commerce giant's global logistics infrastructure. By utilizing the AliExpress "Brand+" channel, Unitree is attempting to provide a standardized procurement experience for international buyers in North America, Europe, and Asia, bypassing the complexities of traditional cross-border robotics shipments.

The Cost of Global Access
The R1 is currently listed at two distinct price points: $6,801.90 and $8,122.86. While the AliExpress listing does not explicitly detail the hardware differences between the two, Unitree’s technical manual for the R1 points to a clear divide between the Base and EDU versions.
Historically, Unitree has applied a "convenience premium" to its retail listings on platforms like Amazon and Walmart. The AliExpress pricing reflects this trend; the base price of roughly $6,800 is a significant markup over the domestic Chinese price of 29,900 yuan (approx. $4,370).
The higher-tier $8,122.86 model likely represents the R1 EDU version. According to the product documentation, the EDU model offers "fully open control interfaces for joints and sensors" and supports mainstream ecosystem simulation platforms. It is also configurable with up to 40 degrees of freedom (DOF), compared to the 20-26 DOF found on the standard versions.
"Born for Sport": Specifications and Capability
Standing 123 cm (approx. 4 feet) tall and weighing roughly 29 kg, the R1 was recently named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025. Marketed with the tagline "born for sport," the R1 is designed for high-dynamic agility, capable of autonomous standing, running, and even performing complex maneuvers like cartwheels.
Key technical specifications include:
- Computing Power: A vision module with 10 TOPS of computing power and an 8-core high-performance CPU.
- Perception: Equipped with bionic binocular cameras (on EDU/Base models) or a monocular camera (on the AIR model), a microphone array, and stereo speakers for AI interaction.
- Actuation: Driven by low-inertia, high-speed internal rotor PMSM motors, allowing for a maximum arm joint torque of 2kg and agile movement in complex scenarios.
- Battery: A detachable 6000 mAh smart battery providing approximately one hour of operating life, depending on the intensity of the task.
Scaling Toward a 20,000-Unit Year
This retail expansion is a critical component of CEO Wang Xingxing’s aggressive growth strategy. Having claimed the global shipment lead with 5,500 humanoid units delivered in 2025, Unitree has set its sights on shipping 20,000 units in 2026.
By making the R1 available via a "one-click" retail experience, Unitree is positioning itself as the primary hardware provider for the next generation of bipedal software developers. However, buyers should note the "No Secondary Development" restrictions often found on retail versions of these robots; the EDU model remains the necessary choice for researchers looking to implement custom AI models or low-level control logic.
