  • Unitree Robotics raised approximately 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million) in its Shanghai STAR Market debut. This massive capital influx pushed the company's valuation to approximately 61 billion yuan.
  • Retail demand for the offering was staggering. The initial online subscription rate reached a multiple of 8,288 times, leaving a final winning rate of just 0.0181 percent.
  • Artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek secured a 2.31 percent stake through a 140.8 million yuan ($20.8 million) strategic investment. The two companies have agreed to co-develop embodied AI models.
  • The successful public listing arrives as Unitree navigates a complex international landscape. The company must balance its dominant volume lead against newly enacted US import bans and intensifying competition with domestic rival AGIBOT.

The STAR Market Sensation

Unitree Robotics is officially entering the public markets with unprecedented momentum. The Hangzhou-based robotics developer has completed its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market, offering 40.45 million shares at 150.8 yuan ($22.35) apiece. The offering raised approximately 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million), propelling the humanoid maker to a valuation of roughly 61 billion yuan.

The sheer volume of retail interest highlights the growing appetite for physical artificial intelligence companies, which are considered one of Beijing's strategic priorities. Preliminary online subscriptions hit an eye-watering multiple of 8,288.82 times the offered amount before clawback mechanisms were triggered, generating over 9.78 million valid applications for a staggering 53.64 billion shares. Even after adjustments between offline and online tranches, the final online winning allocation dropped to a razor-thin 0.0181 percent. In simpler terms, retail investors needed to be among a select 5,525 individuals to successfully secure shares.

This capital injection vastly exceeds the company's preliminary fundraising target of 4.2 billion yuan reported earlier this month, validating its aggressive, vertically integrated hardware strategy.

Enter DeepSeek: Merging Brains and Bodies

While the retail frenzy dominated headlines, the strategic placement tranche revealed a critical partnership that could shape the next generation of Unitree hardware. Approximately 20 percent of the offered shares were allocated to strategic investors, including a Tencent Holdings Ltd.-affiliated investment vehicle and investment arms of major state-owned enterprises such as China National Petroleum Corp., China Southern Power Grid Co., and China Telecom Corp.. However, the most notable participant was DeepSeek.

The prominent Chinese AI startup invested 140.8 million yuan ($20.8 million) for 933,399 shares, securing a 2.31 percent stake with a three-year lockup period. Crucially, the investment is underpinned by a formal agreement to jointly develop artificial intelligence models tailored for humanoid machines.

Under the arrangement, Unitree will prioritize DeepSeek for model-training services and technical solutions. Conversely, DeepSeek will favor Unitree hardware when purchasing robots and exploring embodied AI applications.

This alliance directly addresses a primary bottleneck in the robotics sector: translating raw AI reasoning into reliable physical action within unfamiliar surroundings. DeepSeek has established a formidable reputation for producing highly capable models that perform well on coding, mathematics, and reasoning tests at competitive price points. However, its core strengths remain rooted in language model series rather than multimodal systems designed to parse real-time vision alongside text. While DeepSeek has released separate vision-language research models, such as VL2, these capabilities have not yet been integrated into its flagship commercial offerings. Furthermore, a DeepSeek researcher briefly published a project in April on improving visual reasoning before the paper and GitHub repository were inexplicably withdrawn.

By partnering with Unitree, DeepSeek gains direct access to scarce, physical-world training data generated by robots actively navigating changing environments and manipulating objects. For Unitree, the partnership supplements its hardware expertise with top-tier cognitive models, accelerating the push toward its own anticipated "ChatGPT moment" for embodied AI.

A Complex Global Arena

Unitree’s IPO success unfolds against an increasingly complicated global backdrop. On the domestic front, the company currently controls roughly 31 percent of global humanoid shipments, maintaining a fierce rivalry with another domestic vendor, AGIBOT. A recent Smart Analytics Global (SAG) report indicates that Unitree shipped approximately 5,900 units in the first half of 2026, representing a 170 percent year-on-year increase. Collectively, Chinese humanoid robot manufacturers accounted for 97 percent of all global shipments during this period, cementing the region as the epicenter of the current robotics boom.

However, maintaining international growth will require navigating severe geopolitical headwinds. Unitree's platforms, which serve as foundational hardware for prominent Western projects like the NVIDIA and Sharpa Isaac GR00T reference design, now face significant regulatory hurdles in the United States. Following the recent implementation of sweeping FCC bans on foreign-produced advanced robotic devices, the pathway for Chinese hardware to operate within American research and industrial ecosystems has narrowed dramatically.

The success of Unitree's STAR Market debut proves that domestic and strategic investors remain undeterred by these trade restrictions. With fresh capital and a powerful new AI partner in DeepSeek, Unitree is positioning itself not just as a high-volume hardware manufacturer, but as a central architect of the embodied intelligence era.
