For years, the commercial pathway for advanced robotics in North America followed a straightforward playbook: source high-volume, cost-effective hardware from overseas manufacturers and distribute it to Western developers hungry for testbeds.

Now, escalating geopolitical trade barriers are forcing a fundamental restructuring of that supply chain.

RoboStore, which established itself as the primary North American distribution pipeline for foreign legged systems—most notably platforms from Chinese industry heavyweight Unitree—has officially launched Robo Inc. The new entity represents a decisive transition from standard hardware distributor to a U.S.-based robotics manufacturing, compliance, and systems integration firm.

To anchor the transition, Robo Inc. announced plans for a 66,000-square-foot facility on Long Island, New York, scheduled to begin turning out U.S.-localized solutions in January 2027, with full operational capacity targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

The pivot comes at a critical juncture for the domestic robotics landscape. Late last month, the Federal Communications Commission enacted sweeping import bans on foreign advanced robotic devices, effectively cutting off unreleased Chinese humanoids and quadrupeds from obtaining mandatory FCC equipment authorization.

The policy shift landed heavily on overseas volume leaders. Manufacturers like Unitree, which recently completed a record $904 million STAR Market IPO after surpassing 18,000 cumulative bipedal robots produced, have found their primary route into American laboratories and industrial pilots abruptly barricaded. While the FCC’s rules do not immediately brick existing hardware, they have created a massive logistical and regulatory challenge for Western research teams and enterprises that rely on foreign hardware baselines.

Rather than attempting to fight the regulatory tide, Robo Inc. is positioning itself as an onshore compliance buffer. The company plans to leverage a "global-to-local" operational model, importing global components and platforms where permissible, but executing final assembly, software integration, testing, and security auditing entirely on American soil.

"With U.S.-based assembly, localized data infrastructure, and domestic integration, Robo Inc. will create a robotics platform built for American compliance," said Teddy Haggerty, founder and CEO of RoboStore and Robo Inc.

A Shift from General Humanoids to Dedicated Tasks

Beyond navigating regulatory red tape, the launch of Robo Inc. reflects broader commercial lessons learned across years of hardware deployments. To date, RoboStore has sold and deployed more than 1,500 humanoid and quadruped robots across a client base of 4,500 organizations, including academic hubs like Harvard and MIT, as well as enterprise tech giants like Amazon and Nvidia.

According to the company, practical field experience revealed a stark divide between humanoid marketing promises and actual operational requirements. Instead of general-purpose, all-in-one bipedal machines meant to handle any arbitrary chore, enterprise buyers are seeking constrained systems tailored to defined operational bottlenecks with predictable safety guardrails.

This observation mirrors wider industry data from the first half of 2026, which revealed that industrial and commercial deployments now account for over 70% of humanoid shipments, often relying on pragmatic form factors and wheeled designs over complex bipedal locomotion.

Robo Inc. aims to operate as a hardware-agnostic systems integrator. Instead of being locked into a single supplier's ecosystem, the company plans to evaluate customer tasks individually, selecting platforms and subcomponents based strictly on workload requirements while establishing clear cybersecurity checkpoints. These reviews will assess raw data flows, network access vectors, operating software controls, and environment-specific hazards—areas that have drawn intense scrutiny from Washington regulators.

Managing the Installed Base

While Robo Inc. gears up for its 2027 manufacturing rollout, the legacy RoboStore brand will not disappear overnight. The company stated it will continue to maintain and service its existing domestic fleet, providing spare parts, repairs, and software maintenance for already-deployed units pursuant to current regulatory allowances.

Simultaneously, the company’s developer network, Roboverse—which currently counts more than 4,000 members—will be integrated under the Robo Inc. corporate banner to support software development and application engineering.

Whether assembling foreign-sourced components within a domestic facility will fully satisfy the rigorous standards of federal regulators remains an open question, particularly as agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and Department of War oversee conditional approval waivers. However, RoboStore's transformation highlights an undeniable market reality: in an era of fractured supply chains and tightening tech restrictions, selling robotics in North America is no longer just about hardware access—it is about domestic integration, data security, and verifiable regulatory compliance.
