The next big moment: the Gen 3 reveal

Gen 3 is the reveal to watch. Tesla says it is the first Optimus design intended for mass production, making this more than another prototype update: the unveiling should show what the company plans to build at scale.

What makes Gen 3 different?

In January 2026, Tesla described Gen 3 as its first Optimus design intended for mass production, with upgrades over V2.5 and a new hand design. The company’s stated production schedule is a target, not evidence of customer deliveries.

A long build-up, in Musk’s own words

Musk has been talking up V3 since at least September 2025. His posts below capture both the enthusiasm and the wait. They are direct statements about Tesla’s plans and progress, rather than independent tests of the robot’s capabilities.

For the next reveal, the useful questions are concrete: what changed in the hands and actuators, which tasks run autonomously, how long the robot operates under load, and when customers can actually receive one.

What is Optimus?

Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robotics project, first introduced as Tesla Bot in 2021. It has progressed through several hardware iterations. A generation name identifies a design; it does not, on its own, establish that the robot is available to buy or can perform a job without human help.

The AI behind Optimus

The hardware is only half the story. Tesla is developing the AI that lets Optimus interpret its surroundings and turn what it sees into physical actions, drawing on the approach behind its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.

From pixels to movement

Tesla describes its robotics foundation models as learning control end to end: camera observations and other inputs feed a model that produces actuator commands. The connection to self-driving is the learning approach, data infrastructure and evaluation tools. This does not establish that a car and a humanoid run an identical model or that driving skills transfer directly to robot hands.

A simulated world for learning and testing

At ScaledML 2026, Tesla’s VP of AI Software Ashok Elluswamy described a neural world simulator that generates what a system would see as it acts. In our coverage of the talk, he explained how the video-generation approach extends from driving scenes to indoor environments for Optimus. This gives Tesla a way to explore actions and test behaviour in simulation before taking it into the physical world.

What to watch for in Gen 3

The reveal is also an opportunity to assess the software: which tasks Optimus completes autonomously, how it handles unfamiliar objects and mistakes, and how often a person must intervene. Shared AI infrastructure is a development advantage; dependable manipulation and useful work still need to be demonstrated on the robot.

Can you buy an Optimus?

We do not yet have a verified customer order page, retail price or delivery date in our registry. A projected price at scale is not a purchase offer. We will add ordering information when it can be linked to an official Tesla announcement.

What has Tesla reported about production?

Its July 2026 update described Optimus line installation in Fremont and initial builds for training-data collection and functionality development at Optimus Academy. That report establishes manufacturing preparations, not external customer deployments.

How should demonstrations be read?

Walking, manipulating an object and completing a useful shift are different tests. For each demonstration, look for the task, operating duration, human interventions and whether the robot is teleoperated or autonomous. A short video alone cannot establish dependable operation in a customer’s workplace.

NEO puts household assistance at the centre of the product. It offers a different lens on the race: usefulness around people at home, where supervision, privacy and the level of autonomy matter as much as the hardware.
