The robot guide
The next big milestone for Tesla’s humanoid robot is the Gen 3 reveal. Elon Musk has been building anticipation for the new design; here we follow the promises, the prototypes and the evidence as Optimus moves toward production.
Gen 3 is the reveal to watch. Tesla says it is the first Optimus design intended for mass production, making this more than another prototype update: the unveiling should show what the company plans to build at scale.
What makes Gen 3 different?
In January 2026, Tesla described Gen 3 as its first Optimus design intended for mass production, with upgrades over V2.5 and a new hand design. The company’s stated production schedule is a target, not evidence of customer deliveries.
Tesla Q4 2025 update · January 28, 2026 ↗Optimus renders found in Tesla’s Android app offer a possible glimpse of Gen 3. These are Tesla-created images, not fan renders, but they have not been confirmed to show the next generation’s final design. See the images and read our coverage →
Musk has been talking up V3 since at least September 2025. His posts below capture both the enthusiasm and the wait. They are direct statements about Tesla’s plans and progress, rather than independent tests of the robot’s capabilities.

For the next reveal, the useful questions are concrete: what changed in the hands and actuators, which tasks run autonomously, how long the robot operates under load, and when customers can actually receive one.
Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robotics project, first introduced as Tesla Bot in 2021. It has progressed through several hardware iterations. A generation name identifies a design; it does not, on its own, establish that the robot is available to buy or can perform a job without human help.
Tesla AI Day 2021 · August 19, 2021 ↗The hardware is only half the story. Tesla is developing the AI that lets Optimus interpret its surroundings and turn what it sees into physical actions, drawing on the approach behind its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.
Tesla describes its robotics foundation models as learning control end to end: camera observations and other inputs feed a model that produces actuator commands. The connection to self-driving is the learning approach, data infrastructure and evaluation tools. This does not establish that a car and a humanoid run an identical model or that driving skills transfer directly to robot hands.
Tesla’s robotics foundation-models talk · CVPR 2026 ↗At ScaledML 2026, Tesla’s VP of AI Software Ashok Elluswamy described a neural world simulator that generates what a system would see as it acts. In our coverage of the talk, he explained how the video-generation approach extends from driving scenes to indoor environments for Optimus. This gives Tesla a way to explore actions and test behaviour in simulation before taking it into the physical world.
Read our breakdown of Ashok Elluswamy’s unified AI vision →The reveal is also an opportunity to assess the software: which tasks Optimus completes autonomously, how it handles unfamiliar objects and mistakes, and how often a person must intervene. Shared AI infrastructure is a development advantage; dependable manipulation and useful work still need to be demonstrated on the robot.

Tesla reports replacing the Model S and X lines with Optimus manufacturing equipment. Initial builds are intended for its Optimus Academy, collecting training data and developing functionality.
Tesla Q2 2026 update · July 22, 2026 ↗No. You cannot buy an Optimus yet. Once the next generation is revealed and production starts, we expect Tesla to share more about commercial availability.
Its July 2026 update described Optimus line installation in Fremont and initial builds for training-data collection and functionality development at Optimus Academy. That report establishes manufacturing preparations, not external customer deployments.
Tesla Q2 2026 update · July 22, 2026 ↗Tesla has shared early demos of Optimus performing tasks autonomously. But public appearances have also involved human control, including interactions at its “We, Robot” event. This is called teleoperation: a human controls the robot’s movements remotely.
Other demonstrations have raised suspicions of remote control. In the Miami incident we covered, an Optimus fell backwards, prompting viewers to suggest that a remote operator had removed their headset. Teleoperation was the suspected explanation, though the cause of the fall was not confirmed.
Six useful comparisons, not a ranking. These robots target different jobs and are at different stages of development and deployment.
Optimus sits at the intersection of humanoid hardware, AI and manufacturing. These companies show the different paths toward useful robots—and give you a starting point for exploring the field.
General-purpose robots & AI
A direct comparison for Optimus: Figure combines its own humanoid hardware with Helix, its in-house AI, and ambitions spanning home and commercial work.
The next generation is also taking shape: we reported Figure 04’s design lock in May 2026, a development milestone ahead of its unveiling.
The automotive connection
The clearest parallel to Tesla’s route into robotics: an electric-car maker bringing autonomous-driving AI and manufacturing experience to a humanoid. That makes IRON worth following alongside Optimus, without assuming the two have identical capabilities.
Automotive manufacturing
The electric Atlas is aimed at industrial work, including automotive part sequencing. Its connection to Hyundai makes it a useful comparison for bringing humanoids onto factory floors.
The home
NEO puts household assistance at the centre of the product. It offers a different lens on the race: usefulness around people at home, where supervision, privacy and the level of autonomy matter as much as the hardware.
Logistics & manufacturing
Apollo targets work such as moving cases and totes in warehouses and factories. Follow it to compare how humanoids fit into existing industrial workflows.
Commercial deployment
Digit’s commercial work with GXO makes it an important reference for useful deployment. Its focus on material handling helps ground the comparison in repeatable work, alongside the broader ambitions of Optimus.
Beyond IRON, follow Unitree for its humanoid platforms, AGIBOT for its range of humanoid and wheeled robots, and Galbot for embodied AI and manipulation. Galbot’s wheeled G1 is a reminder that some of the competition is over doing the job, rather than matching the human form.
Dated announcements preserve what Tesla said at the time. Plans may change; they are not treated here as completed milestones.
